How many times has this happened while designing someone’s logo, print material or web site? A client asks to see the it in a color… like blue. Great! Now we just need to narrow it down from literally hundreds of options.

This chart represents 108 blues from the basic Pantone Matching System (PMS) chart. There are a few more varieties of charts, each with a few more blues. As you can see the color blue ranges from purples to greens and everywhere in between.
So lets pick one of these… say PMS 2955. For each PMS color, there are 100 shade variations. The graphic below shows PMS 2955 in 10% increments from 100 to 10%. That’s 10,800 different blues!

So how do we get our clients to narrow it down? There are a few ways to do this. My favorite method is to have the client come in and sit with me while their design is displayed on screen. I can then show them the palette of colors and explain the numbers. Most often the client’s eye will be drawn to a few particular color options. I can ten apply these options to their design to let them see what it looks like. They seem to appreciate having the ability to quickly jump from color to color.
Another method of narrowing down options is to direct the client to an online Pantone color chart http://bit.ly/aELuW. That way they can search through colors at their own pace.
In closing, here are a couple of examples of logos that WallpeDesign has designed with their PMS colors listed…
